I'll start off by saying that I only had this TV a few days. I would also say that I could be wrong about the possibilities for changing it, I do not like about this TV, or in my description of what causes it, but in my research so far I have not found any reason to believing. I am always interested in hearing more information if I do not have the full picture though.
All that said, I personally just do not like this set so much. I bought this to replace a lost Sony XBR6 (also 32), and this has been my experience so far, the good and bad.
Good:
- Image Quality: Image quality on this is really fantastic. Very deep black, crystal-clear picture. I had to tweak the settings a bit (I get to my thoughts on that shortly), and never quite found a setting that I thought was perfect, but even with that is the case in the picture was fantastic, and I can say that with proper calibration it is probably one of the best 32 "sets you can buy as far as PQ goes right now.
-picture settings. I'm actually kind of split on this. The image clearly need to be tweaked from the store settings, and the good news is that this set is probably the most comprehensive set of options for calibration than any other set I've seen, so chances are you can get it if you like it . It is a bit of a double-sharp sword, but because there are so many options unless you really know your stuff it's hard to figure out how to get the perfect balance.
Bath:
- Sound: Sound on 32 'flat screens has never been known to be so great, but I almost immediately felt that the sound was very hollow and tinny compared to the XBR6. I messed with the audio settings, turned on the surround - simulator and increased the bass a little bit. It helped, but I found it lacking.
-Build quality / Styling: This is something that can just come down to opinion (styling sure), but I was pretty unhappy with both of these things in relation to my XBR. The build quality feels cheap and not very robust in comparison, and the styling in general I just felt was bland. The same feeling is extended to the system menus for me-I like the design and appearance of Sony's much more, while Sharp's feels more like an 90's computer menu or something.
-Remote: Weird choice of how they laid out remote control ... button to toggle 'av' mode (basically profiles for picture settings, etc.) is encapsulated in a small drawer, so you have to open that every time you switch between your movies / games / custom modes, etc. In general I feel also that the remote is just a little ugly ...
-Exercise therapy: It was great for me. Everyhing else as it is (although the styling still bugs me), I would have been willing to keep this set just for the picture quality. But this was a contract breaker. I have read on other sites that Sharp ranks low in this area, especially compared to Sony, and I totally agree. Now this is where I think it's possible, I am missing some information but I have not found it yet. With television-based content, it looks fine, but what seems to happen is that you can not turn off the 'movie mode' imaging for all progressive signal based content (480p/720p/1080p). You can see the setting in the menu, but it is disabled (with a different attitude to the black levels I think) - and YES I am in the 'dot by dot mode.
What this means (at least as regards my eyes can see) is that there is no way to turn off the "soap opera effect" on Blu-ray content (and probably Progresive Scan DVD and I have not tried yet). I looked this up on forums and messed with every setting possible, and I just could not get rid of it. Some people have nothing against this direction, some like it, some say it is not even noticeable, but for me it sticks out like a sore thumb and I just hate it. So for me, I think this set would be to go back for xbr9 or un32b6000 (hope that does not have any similar problems ).
So I give this set a 3 stars if I could I would probably give it 3.5. I'm not so worried that it's over or not, or can not have local dimming, all I care about as far as that stuff goes, the picture quality, and this set is very high up when it comes to that. Unfortunately I just found nearly all other aspects of the set, especially the inability to turn the movie off of Blu-ray content to be unsatisfactory. It is a great value for the price but at the same time, I can see why the price is much lower than its competitors in the class.
